Local residents, businesses and volunteer groups are invited to join Councillors and the Council team for a community BBQ to celebrate the 40 year anniversary since the first Blayney Shire Council elections on 12 August 1978.

The special event will be held on Thursday, 9 August from 12 noon to 2pm on the lawn in front of the Blayney Shire Council office in Adelaide Street.

Blayney Shire Mayor, Scott Ferguson said this milestone coincides with Local Government Week – an annual week across NSW to promote Council services held from 30 July – 5 August.

“The 2018 Local Government Week theme is The Power of Community which supports the many achievements delivered by invaluable contributions of staff and Councillors throughout the first 40 years servicing Blayney Shire Council,” Cr Ferguson said.

“Through the power of Councils working in partnership with the community, our local government area has gone from strength to strength over the past 40 years in so many areas, including infrastructure improvements, parks and gardens, cemeteries, roads and bridges construction, waste management, tourism, events, economic development, planning and growth for our historic villages and volunteer community groups,” he said.

The first 9 member Council elected on 12 August 1978 were; EG Thompson, JE Adams, TH Johnson, GP Braddon, SJ Jones, JW Ashton, EM Jones, BD Colburt and JR Cowan.  The first Mayor, or President as was the title in those days, was Councillor E Thompson who was elected at the Special Council Meeting held on Friday 18 August 1978.  A ballot was conducted in which Councillor E Thompson received 6 votes and Councillor J Ashton 3 votes.  Councillor Thompson was the former President of Blayney Shire Council from 1966.
