Media Release - Free Child Restraint Fitting Day a success

A call to action to encourage Blayney Shire parents and carers of young children to get their child restraint fittings checked has proved successful.

Road Safety Officer, Iris Dorsett, with the assistance of Authorised Restraint Fitter Michael Baker, recently conducted a free child restraint check day in Blayney and is delighted with the results.

Of the nine child restraints that were presented for checking, five required minor adjustments which involved the installation of gated buckles, and one out of date restraint was detected.

“Most were compliant, with only minor adjustments being performed,” Ms Dorsett said. “‘It is a very pleasing result. People took the opportunity to access this service and it’s wonderful to see that in the majority of cases, restraints are correctly fitted and our little ones are being transported safely.”

The day highlighted that some people were unaware that restraints actually have a ‘use by date’, so it was a great opportunity to bring this to people’s attention.

A correctly fitted child restraint greatly increases a child’s safety during a crash.

Disturbingly, of all crashes in the Blayney Shire (between 2011 and 2015) involving children, a child restraint was only worn in 33% of these crashes.

“Police data confirms that there is non-compliance issue with the usage and incorrect usage of child restraints in the Chifley Command,” Ms Dorsett said.

“The free child restraint check day was very successful in providing public education. Many of the attendees took advantage of the fitter’s knowledge and expertise and were keen to seek his advice and tips.”

People who participated in the free Check your Restraints day were eligible to enter a draw to win a $100 service voucher to be used at Michael Baker Automotive with the winner being Jane Webb of Errowanbang.

Anyone wishing to get their child restraints checked or fitted, should make a booking directly with an Authorised Restraint Fitter.
