Media Release - New fitness equipment and walking trails launched - Healthy & Happy Challenge 2018

Back by popular demand, this September the Blayney & Villages Healthy & Happy Wellness Challenge gets into full swing with individuals and teams encouraged to register for the community program by 17 September 2018.

Blayney Shire Mayor, Scott Ferguson said, the Healthy & Happy Wellness Challenge will offer affordable ways to motivate people of all ages across Blayney and surrounding villages to eat healthy, join group fitness and look after their body and mind.

“It’s not just about weight loss, it’s also about encouraging everyone to become more active in their local community groups – be it social or sporting. There are huge benefits both physically and mentally that come from engaging more with those around us,” Cr Ferguson said.

“The success of the initial program last year, helped Blayney Shire Council secure $15,000 in funding from the NSW Office of Preventive Health and the National Heart Foundation and through the Blayney Village Enhancement Program, an additional $15,000 was provided to enable the purchase of 12 new pieces of outdoor fitness equipment.

“This equipment has now been installed around Blayney, connected by a series of 3 new walking trails at distances of 1km, 3km, 5km starting at CentrePoint to motivate people on their health journey.

“Individuals can nominate a goal and make changes to lifestyle, diet, exercise and connecting in a positive way for better health outcomes. For teams, the Multi Sport Challenge scorecard has been developed to provide some healthy competition and motivate participants on their wellness journey,” he said.

There are plenty of activities being organised for all fitness levels and age groups around Blayney & Villages to support the 3-month challenge including; fitness classes, teen gym, Kids Fit crèche for child minding at CentrePoint, walking groups and a Health Expo hosted by Blayney Multipurpose Centre to provide information about mental health awareness, stop smoking, diabetes awareness and much more.

The CentrePoint Sport & Leisure 25 metre indoor pool has reopened after initial upgrade works in time for the challenge. Learn to Swim and Squad groups taking enrolments for the start of the new school term (Term 4).

Health checks are back at the Blayney Farmers’ Markets from this Sunday 16 September and Bernardi’s Marketplace will be hosting a guest chef healthy cooking demonstration every Friday afternoon from 4pm with free taste testing.

Teams of up to 12 people can take on others in the weekly Multi-Sports Challenge at CentrePoint for the chance to win some great prizes. Cost of $32 per person for non-members including weekly entry fee or just $12 per person for gold members.

Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of these activities.  Registrations are now open for teams and individuals.
