Regional tourism collaboration drives visitor numbers to Central NSW

Destination NSW has released statistics for the year ended December 2017, Central NSW received over 2.5 million domestic overnight visitors which was a 21.2% increase from the previous year; nearly 3.1 million domestic daytrip visitors (up 6.4%) and 38,700 international overnight visitors.

Blayney Shire Mayor, Scott Ferguson said Council’s partnership with neighbouring councils and regional tourism organisations has boosted visitation to Blayney and the surrounding area bringing new growth opportunities.

“This is fantastic news for the region as statistics indicate the domestic daytrip visitors spent $408m in the region, reflecting a 31.7% increase in spend from the previous year and domestic overnight visitors spent $970m in the region (up by 17% on YE Dec 16),” Councillor Ferguson said.

International overnight visitors spent $33m in the region which is up by 25.6% from the previous year.  Holiday (60%) was the largest purpose of visit for international overnight visitors to the region, followed by visiting friends and relatives. The increase in business reasons for visiting the region grew by 34.2%.

Destination NSW have identified that eating out at restaurants and/or cafes are the top activities to do in Central NSW for the domestic daytrip travellers and the stakeholders and tourism operators across the region enjoyed the $970m spend in the region by domestic overnight visitors - the largest age group of (domestic & overnight) visitors to the region was the 15-29 year old age bracket.

“This region has worked collaboratively on the Unearth Campaign, supporting each other and promoting our local events and experiences,” Mayor Ferguson said. “It’s great to see our united efforts adding value to the local economy.”

Central NSW will continue to enjoy this increase in visitors and spending, especially by comparison that the Hunter region’s statistics were up by 8.7% and the Blue Mountains overnight visitation was up by just 7.7%.
