Wawremlcome BLAYNEY SHIRE MAYOR SCOTT FERGUSON Every year we welcome many visitors to our beautiful Shire of Villages which is nestled between the larger regional cities of Orange, Bathurst and Cowra. We invite you to experience this beautiful part of Wiradjuri country. Visitors and residents enjoy four distinct seasons and are surrounded by a wonderful rural landscape which supports the growth of quality agricultural products including food and wine. Living in the Blayney Shire for most of my life and running a local plumbing business, I regularly travel around our Shire and just cannot get enough of the beautiful scenery and wonderful variety of experiences that our historic villages have to offer. The unique early colonial architecture and history in Carcoar still amazes me and I also spend time with family and friends enjoying the food, wine and shopping in the very pretty village of Millthorpe. It’s very relaxing to spend time at Carcoar Dam and visit the many museums that tell stories of life from another era. Of course, finishing the day at one of our friendly country pubs chatting with the locals is something to look forward to. When travelling around the area, there is always an opportunity to meet interesting characters who enjoy sharing their personal stories while assisting visitors in the right direction with their local knowledge and experience. Within this guide you will discover many hidden gems – a small window into our quintessential rural lifestyle and the natural beauty which attracts visitors, businesses, investors and new residents. I hope that everyone enjoys learning more about this picturesque part of Central NSW we are lucky to call home. Feel free to indulge your senses, unwind and share our history as you explore our wonderful Shire of Villages. 5

Meet the locals SCULPTING TO NEW HEIGHTS LOUISE PURCELL Mandurama artist, Louise Purcell developed an appreciation for handmade aesthetics at an early age when she was given a pottery mug instead of chocolate every Easter. Her mum also collected sculptural ceramics. This gave her a childhood passion for pottery which has grown into a lifelong career. Louise trained at the National Art School gaining formal qualifications in ceramics. Louise turned her craft into a retail business in 1992 establishing Carcoar Pottery with her husband, Carl which is now located at the old Carcoar Court House. Built in 1882, this architectural masterpiece is one of the treasured heritage buildings in Carcoar which has been conserved by the Carcoar and District Historical Society – just one of the many museums in the area bringing early settlement to life for visitors. Louise’s love of textiles led to the art of spinning and now Louise spins fleece from her six pet alpacas for gorgeous garments. In 2017, Louise was the overall winner of the Blayney Textures of One Art Exhibition with her magnificent bilby totem pole standing over 2 metres tall. Louise’s work is fast becoming recognised around the region and beyond. TOP REASONS WHY LOUISE SAYS TO COME AND STAY: › It’s the perfect holiday destination – close to Sydney and Canberra – with cafés, nurseries, boutique shops, historic buildings, tree-lined streets. › Belubula River flows through the area with gorgeous swimming holes, small waterfalls and rapids with pretty camping areas and remote gems on the explore list. › C arcoar village is a beautiful heritage town that offers good coffee, a great local pub, museums and vibrant events, such as the Australia Day Street Fair for fun, free family entertainment.8

Meet the locals COOL CLIMATE WINES A CROSSING FAMILY AFFAIR ANGULLONG WINES The magnificent 5,000 acre property, ‘Angullong’ is located near Panuara in the Blayney Shire and has been home to the Crossing family since 1950. Ben Crossing, his wife, Heidi and 3 children, his brother, James and his family and their mother, Hatty run Angus cattle alongside their 500 acre vineyard. First planted in 1998, the vineyard is one of the most extensive in the Orange region. Angullong Wines has established itself as one of the most recognised cool climate wine brands in Australia. The first vintage was in 2003 and the varieties, style and production levels have gained momentum since. Parents, Bill and Hatty Crossing were always interested in planting grapes as they were confident the soil type and climatic conditions at ‘Angullong’ would be suitable. Some of the most diverse grape varieties grow alongside more traditional varieties for which the region is renowned. Angullong is recognised for championing Italian varieties of Barbera, Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio, however the Crossings are continually making new additions and have introduced Sagrantino, Montepulciano, and Malbec. The vineyard supplies grapes for the Angullong brand as well as several other wineries outside the Orange region. In 2008, the Angullong Cellar Door was established in Victoria Street, Millthorpe. The cellar door is now open 7 days a week from 11am to 5pm. During the region’s annual Wine Week celebration every spring, the Crossings host a long lunch, “Outstanding in the Vines” where 150 people gather to enjoy fine food and wine in the Angullong vineyard. BEN’S FAVOURITE LOCAL GEMS ARE: › Millthorpe, Carcoar, cellar doors, restaurants and museums.34

Meet the locals ART OF GOOD FOOD TONY WORLAND, TONIC When asked why people should come and stay, Tony says “There's too many reasons to list...Don't tell everyone, it's still our secret” Tony and Nicole Worland moved to Millthorpe after “accidentally” discovering the village over 17 years ago. Like many residents who have relocated to the area, the Worland’s were searching for a change from working in Sydney and found a gorgeous house that they fell in love with. Now their family calls the beautiful village of Millthorpe home – a destination unspoilt with its cobblestones, treelined streets, Victorian terraces and friendly locals. Tony has worked alongside world renowned chefs, Matt Moran, Michael Manners and Gordon Ramsay during his career so it was a natural progression, that in 2003, Tony established Tonic Restaurant in the heart of Millthorpe. His experience is reflected in the quality of food served and this is a meal not to be missed. The menu has a seasonal focus and showcases the best from local venison, beef and lamb producers. Over the last 14 years the restaurant has regularly been awarded a coveted Chef's Hat by the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide. Surrounded by picturesque rural landscape, Millthorpe is the perfect setting for a wedding or private event at the Tonic private function room positioned next to the restaurant on Pym Street. The impressive building is the villages’ former picture theatre, originally built in the early 1900s and features soaring pressed metal ceilings, private courtyard for elegance and ambience for every occasion. WHAT TONY FINDS UNIQUE ABOUT THE AREA… › The amazing people. › History that is still preserved by the locals who cherish it.40

However, at just 14 years, Cleo is running her own race. Her passion for 200m hurdles and long jump has seen her successfully represent Blayney at a Zone, Regional and State level. Then in 2017, Cleo was chosen for an Australian team which travelled to Vancouver and Kelowna, Canada to compete. Cleo said this has been her career highlight so far and was made possible by the generous support of the whole Blayney community fundraising to help pay for the trip. Cleo enjoys her sport and trains 4 days a week in Orange and on King George Oval with the Blayney Little Athletics Club – one of many local sports clubs thriving in the area. “I love competing and I have made great friends along the way.” Sport is a passion in Blayney and villages and the whole community loves to get behind their favourite team. Meet the locals NO BULL – BLAYNEY’S BULL RIDING BROTHERS SIMPLY LOVE IT! LACHLAN AND JORDAN LITTLE Big or small, Jordan Little, 18 years and younger brother Lachlan Little, age 15, know ‘no fear’ when it comes to the size of the bull they are riding. The talented brothers are often seen donning their jeans, boots and cowboy hat for a training session at their family’s purpose-built bull riding arena. Living with their parents at their Guyong Road property in Blayney all their lives, Jordan and Lachlan started riding bulls – weighing 600 plus kilograms – 6 years ago while still at primary school. What started as a bit of after school fun with dad, former professional bull rider, Paul Little, led to Jordan’s first bull ride at the Orange rodeo in 2012. Mastering the art of hanging on for that elusive 8 seconds without being bucked off, both Jordan and Lachlan qualified in the nation’s top 4 and were selected to represent Australia at the National High School Rodeo Association in America in 2017. Despite their international success in this high adrenalin sport, the boys continue to call Blayney home and agree it’s a great location with great people. They invite people to visit to discover what Blayney town and the surrounding historic villages have to offer with beautiful landscapes. Rodeos throughout the region are held annually including the Taralga Rodeo on the Australia Day weekend, Parkes in March, Oberon in February and Rockley in October.
