Claiming your animal from a Council animal shelter

Stray animals are impounded in the animal shelter for at least five working days. If your animal is impounded you will need to pay an animal release fee.

You can claim your animal by contacting council. Ensure you bring a form of identification to collect the animal. Council will not enter into any dispute over ownership of the animal should more than one person claim to be the owner.

When you collect your animal from the animal shelter, you:
  • will need to pay fees to cover the time your animal has spent in the shelter
  • will need to microchip and register your cat or dog (if not already registered)
  • you may be issued an infringement notice if the animal was found to be in breach of the Companion Animals Act 1998 No 87
