Microchipping and Registration

In NSW, all cats and dogs, unless exempt, must be microchipped and registered by 12 weeks of age or before being transferred to a new owner, whichever happens first.

Veterinarians can microchip your cat or dog for a fee that varies depending on the veterinarian chosen.

Registering your cat or dog in NSW

  • Once the animal is microchipped, you must register your cat or dog with Council by 12 weeks of age or immediately upon transfer to a new owner (whichever happens first).
  • An additional registration payment fee must be made by 6 months of age if the dog is not desexed or a cat permit must be applied for if the cat is not desexed
  • If you have any questions about the microchipping and registration process, contact Council.
  • Further details are available on the NSW Pet Registry website.

You can now update your contact details online. If your dog or cat is lost, up to date contact details are the best way to bring your pet home. Council impounding fees apply if your details are not up to date or your animal is impounded regularly.

Any pet owners who breed an animal, whether for commercial or recreational purposes, must apply for a breeder identification number.

All pet owners and breeders can apply to Service NSW and create an online account to update their details with their animal and litter details.

All NSW Councils collect registration fees to:

  • support the network of animal shelter officers who collect around 5,000 stray animals each year
  • create and maintain fenced off-leash areas and bins with collection bags in many parks within Council areas

Please note fees and charges are reviewed each year by the Office of Local Governmenand indexed 1st July each year.

Blayney Shire Council, in conjunction with Blayney Veterinary Clinic, runs a De-sexing and Microchipping Program for Blayney Shire residents by subsidising the cost of microchipping and/or de-sexing companion animals.

The program runs each financial year until all funds are expended.  Check with Council to confirm when the program is running on 6368 2104.
