Microchipping and Registration

In NSW, all cats and dogs, other than exempt cats and dogs, must be microchipped by 12 weeks of age or before being sold or given away, whichever happens first.

Veterinarians can microchip your cat or dog for a fee that varies depending on the veterinarian chosen.

Registering your cat or dog in NSW is a two-step process:

  • The first step involves ensuring that your cat or dog is microchipped by 12 weeks of age or before being sold or given away.

  • The second step involves lifetime-registering your cat or dog with Council from six months of age. This enables you to have your cat or dog desexed before registration, so that you can pay the lower lifetime-registration fee. If you have any questions about the microchipping and registration process, contact Council.  Further details are available on the Department's website.

Please note fees and charges are reviewed each year. For more information please contact Council.
